Erythromycin is used as an alternative to tetracycline in the treatment of acne, rosacea, and various types of folliculitis.
It is also used as a broad spectrum antibiotic in patients with infected eczema or infected psoriasis.

Adverse effects:

  • QT prolongation when used in combination with terfenadine or astemizole. There is an increased risk for cardiac arrhythmias.
  • Decreased clearance of warfarin and cyclosporine.


  • Typical dosage for mild to moderate acne is 500 mg po daily for a minimum of 2 to 4 months.
  • More severe acne may require up to 1 gm bid.
