Xeomin in New York, New York (NY)

Xeomin is an injectable cosmetic enhancement for aging skin. It also has several other limited medical uses for conditions involving muscle spasms. This drug is comparable to Botox. It is a purer form of botulinum toxin type A. Xeomin works by causing temporary loss of or reduction of underlying muscle movement. When the muscle contractions are diminished, so are the wrinkles. While primarily used for cosmetic purposes, Xeomin also has other medical indications. Cosmetic uses include: Glabellar frown lines or those seen between the eyes when squinting; Upper lip lines; Horizontal forehead lines Other uses include: Cervical dystonia or severe neck muscle spasms (uncontrolled eye blinking); eyelid spasms or blepharospasm; eye conditions where the eyes point in different directions or strabismus Good Candidates include patients should be in good general health to undergo Xeomin injections. The cosmetic injection trend has been for a younger population of patients to use this U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved drug to enhance their appearance. Xeomin involves simple injections at the site being treated. This is done as an outpatient in a physician’s office. A very thin gauge needle is used for the injection(s). Some areas need one or more injections for an effective outcome. The actual procedure takes under one hour, often times it is completed in about ten minutes. There are potentially serious side effects to Xeomin if the drug spreads to other areas of the body than where it was injected. These include difficulty swallowing and/or breathing, weakness, blurred vision and hoarseness. Other side effects include Itching, skin redness, swelling, wheezing, dizziness, dry mouth, and dry eyes. All side effects should be promptly reported to the treating physician. There is little or no downtime after Xeomin injections. Patients directly return to their usual activities and schedule. Patients are instructed to keep the neck and head elevated for three days after an injection to prevent the drug from traveling to other areas of the body. They are also advised not to rub or touch the injection sites for the same purpose. The positive benefits of Xeomin injections last for three to six months after treatment. The effects gradually fade over time. This drug should not be administered more often than every three months. Medical Insurance Coverage: When administered for purely cosmetic reasons, Xeomin is not covered by medical insurance. The other medical-based reasons for the drug are covered by most insurance plans but should be verified before undergoing treatment. Patients should be sure that their Xeomin injections are administered and monitored by a qualified and experienced healthcare professional.
