Cellulite is a word used to describe the lumpy, bumpy fat deposits that occur just underneath the skin's surface. These fat deposits result in a dimpled appearance, which may also be called "cottage cheese thighs" or "orange peel skin." Cellulite is normally seen in the thighs, abdominal area and in the pelvic region.
Why Cellulite Develops
The causes of cellulite are not completely certain, and they can vary from one person to another. Certain hormones, such as insulin and estrogen, may contribute to cellulite development. Diet may play a big role in cellulite development. Since people who eat large amount of fatty food, fried food and refined carbohydrates are more likely to get fat deposits, these may show up as cellulite. Sedentary people may be more likely to develop cellulite since they are rarely exercising to burn away fat deposits. With a healthy low-fat diet and reasonable exercise, it may be possible to avoid at least some cellulite development.
