Intense pulse light therapy (IPL) is an alternative to laser hair removal. While similar to the laser method with its use of light energy, IPL uses a broader spectrum of light that treats multiple conditions when used with specific filters.
How does IPL work?
Your doctor administers sequenced pulses of light onto your skin with a specialized handheld light gun. The light energy then targets and heats up the hair follicles under the skin, effectively destroying them. The body reabsorbs the follicles and the hair is reduced.
What are the side effects of IPL?
While there aren't very many long-term effects associated with IPL, there may be short-term effects, including:
- Pain
- Minor swelling
- Redness
- Sunburn sensation
- Infection
When will I see results?
For IPL, you will likely need four to six treatments before you see any results. By the fourth session, you should be able to see hair shedding off. Your hair-free period will last up to six weeks.
