Excessive Sweating, or hyperhydrosis in medical terms, is a condition that can be triggered by stress, fear or extreme temperatures. It may also be a hereditary condition or be caused by an underlying condition such as diabetes, thyroid dysfunctions, pituitary gland problems, tumors or menopause. There are also a few medications that can cause excessive sweating. The list of medications is quite long (presently 528 known drugs may cause hyperhydrosis); however, there are a few commonly used medications that you should be aware of.
1. Advil or Ibuprofen
Advil or Ibuprofen or any variation of Ibuprofen may provoke excessive sweating. Advil is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medication that may be prescribed for a number of conditions, including rheumatism or arthritis. Advil also has analgesic effects and may reduce fever as well.
2. Aspirin
Aspirin contains acetylsalicylic acid and is an anti-inflammatory drug. It can be used to reduce fever, pain, swelling or blood clotting. Present studies are made, as aspirin is thought to be able to prevent cancer.
3. Busiprone
Busiprone is a tranquilizer drug having similar effects to diazepam. Even though Busiprone is less frequently used than other tranquilizer drugs, it may be prescribed in certain cases. One of the side effects of Busiprone is hyperhydrosis.
4. Calcium
Calcium is an essential mineral that supports the heart functions and gives bone strength. An excess of calcium may lead to excessive sweating. Check with your physician to see if you require calcium supplements.
5. Codeine
Codeine is an opioid pain reliever and may also be used as an anti-tussive drug. Codeine may also have sedative effects, as it is related to morphine and can cause perspiration in excess.
6. Interferon
Interferon can be used to stop the growth of cancerous cells and is a biological response modifier. Sweating is one of the side effects of interferon treatment.
7. Magnesium Hydroxide
Magnesium hydroxide is often used as an antacid medication and can lead to hyperhydrosis.
8. Meloxicam
Meloxicam is a cyclooxygenase inhibitor and can be used to inhibit the formation of enzymes and prostaglandins. If administered for a longer period of time, meloxicam will cause excessive sweating in the palms, face, feet or chest.
9. Paxil
Paxil is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor medication (SSRI) that can be used for depression and anxiety disorders. The drug may cause sweating.
10. Prozac
Prozac is also used in anxiety and depression treatment. It may cause hyperhydrosis if used for longer periods of time.
11. Tramadol
Tramadol is used as an analgesic and it is similar to codeine, affecting opioid receptors. A longer treatment with Tramadol may cause excessive sweating. Tramadol hydrochloride may also cause excessive sweating.
12. Tylenol
Tylenol is a pain reliever also known as acetaminophen or paracetamol. Tylenol may also be used for fever and cold and flu symptoms.
The use of amphetamine or other stimulant drugs can also cause excessive sweating.
