There are several types of medications that are used to treat acne. Some are available both for topical application and oral administration. Others are only for topical application or only for oral administration. Most medications used to treat acne - such as antibiotics, whic can be used both topically and orally - are not specific for this problem. If after a trial period they are not providing benefit, another medication can be used. The most specific and reproducibly effective treatment for acne is Isotretinoin. It is taken orally, usually, for a 20 to 24 week course. Its administration is closely monitored with monthly serum testing and there are side effects that are consistently experienced such as dryness of the skin and lips, among others. It provides the greatest degree of 'clearing' that is usually sustained for months to years after the course of treatment has been completed. It is available topically as Tretinoin cream or gel. However, it does not provide the degree of improvement or any sustained remission as does its oral counterpart

There isn't a "best" treatment for acne, rather just different options. Some of these options will work for you and some for others, but none of the options will work for all.

- Over the counter medications including programs like Proactiv as well as Retin A or Glycolic Acid based skin creams.
- Antibiotics such as doxycycline and minocycline.
- Accutane
- Laser based treatments and photodynamic therapy with ALA
