Should I look for certain qualifications or certifications?
This varies state by state, but in most states, including my state of Virginia, physicians perform the procedure. Now that being said, you should be aware that any physician can perform the procedure. Although there are non-surgeon physicians that do very good liposuction and the procedure as performed today was actually developed by a dermatologist (tumescent procedure), I would feel safest having this performed by a physician with core surgery training. This does NOT, however, translate into a plastic surgeon. They are typically more expensive and a cosmetic surgeon is typically more focused on cosmetic procedures that plastic surgeons, who are often more focused on reconstructive procedures. I hope this helps.

We conduct SmartLipo in our office and the procedure is performed by Dr. Weiss. Her Medical Assistant, who is trained specifically in SmatLipo, assists with the procedure. We display the training certificates for the Dr and MA in the room. Hope this helps you.

Surgeons or doctors perform the procedure and there is usually an assistant of some sort in the room with the doctor. You should look for either a plastic surgeon or a doctor who is trained and possesses a certification for this procedure.
