Causes of Stretch Marks

There are many different causes of stretch marks. Stretch marks are a type of scar that forms an indent on the skin. Stretch marks usually appear in a bluish or purplish color. The most common places that stretch marks occur are on the abdomen, thighs and breasts. These are the most common causes of stretch marks.

Puberty

In many cases, children going through puberty can develop stretch marks due to the rapid growth of their bodies during this time. Girls going through puberty can develop stretch marks due to the rapid growth of the breasts. Males can also develop stretch marks on the abdomen, back or thighs if they hit a growth spurt.

Pregnancy

During pregnancy, a woman's body goes through many different changes. Since the baby is growing inside of the belly, it is the most common place for a pregnant woman to develop stretch marks. The lower abdomen is usually where the stretch marks will appear. This usually occurs during the third trimester since this is the time the baby does the most growing. She may also develop stretch marks on her breasts due to the production of milk. Other parts of the body may also develop stretch marks due to excess weight gain.

Rapid Weight Gain

Gaining weight in a short amount of time can make the skin grow and cause stretch marks. This is one reason why children who are going through puberty often develop stretch marks. Besides the heath problems that gaining weight can cause, it is best to maintain a steady and healthy weight. Many people gain excess weight if they are going through an emotional time in their life or a lifestyle change. It is important to deal with issues in life without turning to food. In some cases, people who lift weights can get stretch marks due to the increase of muscle mass on the most concentrated area of the body.

Disease

There are some diseases that can cause stretch marks to appear all over the body. The most common diseases which can cause stretch marks are Cushing's Syndrome, adrenal gland disease or Marfan Syndrome. Cushing's syndrome and adrenal diseases cause the body to make excess cortisol, which can cause weight gain especially in the abdomen.

Medications

There are some medications that can cause stretch marks. The use of steroids is the most common type of drug that can cause stretch marks. This is probably due to the fact that steroids make the muscles grow and in some cases gain weight. Other types of medications that can cause stretch marks are corticosteroid creams or lotions. It is best to only use these drugs under the supervision of a doctor for medical reasons.

Almost everyone develops stretch marks during their lifetime. Stretch marks are not dangerous and can disappear or lighten over time.
