Rosacea Natural Treatment: Azelaic Acid Cream

Rosacea natural treatment options have gained popularity, as these treatments don’t have the side effects that accompany the traditional treatments. Rosacea is a common skin condition that can be treated by employing azelaic acid cream.

Azelaic Acid

Azelaic acid is a substance that may be found in wheat and rye. The substance may be normally secreted by the yeast cells present on the human skin. Azelaic acid may be used for skin conditions such as acne or rosacea. The substance has antibacterial properties, but may also reduce swelling and hyperpigmentation.

The substance may be found in various skin products, but typically, not in concentrations of over 20%. Azelaic acid may be marketed as Acnederm, Azelex or Finacea, but may also be prepared by pharmacists, based on a prescription from a dermatologist.

Using Azelaic Acid Cream

Prior to applying the azelaic acid cream, the skin should be cleansed with a non irritant generic skin wash. Then, the skin should be moisturized with a fragrance free cream. After the skin is dry, the azelaic acid cream can be applied. The cream can be applied one to three times per day.

Even if the azelaic acid creams are typically well tolerated by your skin, creams that have a higher concentration (i.e. 20% of acid) may cause irritation. In patients with darker skin, there may be slight discolorations.

If such reactions occur, a dermatologist should be consulted; the treatment should be discontinued or the concentration of the cream may be modified.
