6 Natural Scar Treatments

There are traditional and alternative scar treatments. The scars form due to broken skin and are made up of fibrous tissue, which is of a poorer quality than the skin tissue. The scars may be temporary or permanent, depending on the type of damage to the skin. Natural scar treatments can be effective in a few cases, and here are 6 of them:

1. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is a well known plant that has many uses in alternative medicine. The aloe vera gel or juice can have a soothing effect and can also reduce swelling and irritation.

For scars, aloe vera will work as a bleach, to reduce the color of the scars. Aloe vera juice is preferred and should be applied twice per day in the affected areas. The aloe vera juice should eliminate superficial scars and diminish the appearance of permanent scars.

2. Cucumber Paste

Cucumber is a vegetable that can be used in alternative medicine, as it has a lot of beneficial compounds. There are several commercial creams that use cucumber extracts.

For scars, cucumber should be prepared with olive oil. Crush a field cucumber and add 5 tbsp of olive oil. Leave the paste to dry, and you can keep it overnight. The cucumber will smoothen the surface of the scars, making them less visible.

3. Indian Gooseberry

The Indian gooseberry, also known as the Emblica officinalis, is a plant that can be used on wounds, to help them heal faster and reduce the appearance of scars. The Indian gooseberry contains vitamin C, which helps with wound healing.

4. Vitamin E Capsules

Vitamin E is important to help the skin heal. Get a few capsules of vitamin E and apply them on the skin. You may mix the vitamin E with aloe vera or honey, which can also diminish scars.

5. Other Natural Treatments

Scars may also be treated using:

  • Cocoa butter on the skin
  • Honey
  • Applying tea bags (i.e. green tea or chamomile)
  • Tea tree oil
  • Lemon juice
  • Sour cream
  • Garlic
  • Ice cubes
  • Oatmeal

6. Diet Considerations

The diet can influence the development of scars and may help the wounds heal. As mentioned earlier, vitamin E is essential for skin healing and may be applied on the skin. However, vitamin E may also be introduced in the diet. Foods that are rich in vitamin E include:

  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Oil
  • Wheat germs
  • Wheat products

The vitamin E will speed up the recovery of the skin and will diminish the chances of scar formation. When scars already exist, vitamin E may help reduce the visibility of the scars, giving the skin a smoother appearance. In addition to vitamin E, vitamin C can also help the healing process. Oranges, grapefruit or other sour foods contain vitamin C. Vitamin C holds collagen, which is essential for the health and appearance of the skin.

Last but not least, don’t forget about incorporating proteins in your diet, which can reduce the appearance of scars.
