Using Photodynamic Therapy for Actinic Keratosis

Using Photodynamic Therapy for Actinic Keratosis is an option that many people choose for treating problem areas. Actinic Keratosis is damage on the skin caused by the sun. The damaged area can sometimes have precancerous indications which require treatment. There are several procedures used to get rid of the problem, and Photodynamic Therapy is one to consider.

The Procedure

To prepare for the procedure, a cleanser is used to remove any oil from your skin. During the procedure, a topical photosensitizing ointment will be applied to the troublesome area and left for about 15 minutes. This medicine, once activated by light lasers, will target only the damaged skin, leaving healthy tissue untouched. The entire procedure usually lasts about an hour. This procedure is much less intense than traditional procedures such as burning, excision or freezing away problem areas. Depending on the amount of damage on your skin, you may have to come back for more treatment sessions.

The Benefits

Photodynamic Therapy is virtually painless and is done on an outpatient basis so you are able to go home immediately. Recovery is quick and you are able to return to your normal activities rather soon. You will be instructed to stay out of the sun for a couple of days. Your skin will react to the therapy as if you have a sunburn, appearing red and peeling. This is normal and will go away in a week or so. Photodynamic Therapy will totally remove signs of Actinic Keratosis such as skin lesions, growths, scaly areas and discoloration on the skin.
