Is Dysport the New Botox?

Dysport is the very first and the only injectable neuromuscular blocking agent to be created since BOTOX. It has proven to be a safe treatment for premature wrinkling and facial creases of the skin. The injections relax the most tense facial muscles and even out the overall appearance of the skin. Dysport has been approved by the FDA and is now frequently used by skin care professionals as a top wrinkle fighter.

What is Dysport?

Dysport is a Botulinum toxin that has recently been approved by the FDA. It works in a similar way to Botox in relaxing the facial muscles of the face, especially those found between the eyebrows.

How does the procedure work?

Small amounts of Dysport are directly injected into the muscles of the face beneath frown lines. It normally takes from three to five small, nearly painless injections to result in an effective treatment. Local anesthesia is not required but if this is a concern for a patient, the skin can be numbed before the injection. The entire treatment last between 10 and 20 minutes. For the next couple of days after the treatment, the muscles will slowly start to relax. It may not be noticed as it is happening, but you will soon be aware that you no longer can contract frown muscles.

What areas of the body does Dysport treat?

The muscles of the face, reducing wrinkling on the skin’s surface by temporarily immobilizing facial muscles that cause wrinkles.

Who is a candidate for Dysport?

Injections are ideal for almost any patient who desires to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and lines on the face and achieve a look that is younger and refreshed. Both men and women are able to benefit from Dysport and also experience the emotional and physical effects of the new and improved appearance.

What is the recovery like?

A patient who receives Dysport should be able to go back to normal daily activities right after the treatment. Make up can be worn to cover up any temporary redness or bruising and over-the-counter pain pills is all that a patient may need to treat subsequent headaches that may occur.

What will the results be like?

A Dysport treatment immobilizes specific muscles in the face, focusing in on the muscles that cause wrinkles and folds in the facial skin. It smoothes out wrinkles and facial lines and is believed to last for nearly 4 months. Results will begin to be seen within 1 to 7 seven days with day 3 as the median.

What are the risks?

Along with the many desired effects, Dysport can cause effects that are unwanted. The most common are mild bruising and temporary soreness. Some patients do experience headaches that may last a few hours after treatment. There is a very small chance of a complication ‘ptosis’, which is a drooping eyelid. This can last for just a few days or up to several weeks. It is very rare that an allergic reaction will cause a skin rash or symptoms similar to the flu.

Is Dysport approved for use in the U.S.?

Dysport was approved by the FDA on June 30, 2009 for treating spasms located in the neck and as an anti-wrinkle treatment. Injections have been approved to be available at dermatologists’ offices and select cosmetic providers.

Is Dysport covered by insurance companies?

Dysport treatment is not usually covered by insurance because it is primarily used for cosmetic purposes unless it is proved to be a medical necessity to the patient.
