The best way to treat pigmentation depends on your skin type, your budget, your medical condition and your lifestyle. There are several methods including prescription strength products, peels and light-based treatments such as Fotofacial or skin resurfacing. The different treatments may be used in combination to enhance results. Peeling by chemical or mechanical microdermabrasion yield essentially the same results.

We do not feel that chemical peels and microdermabrasion are the best treatment for hyperpigmentation. In fact in many cases, these treatments will not work at all. For example, we have treated several patients in the past year that had traumatic (brown hyperpigmented) scars from bug bites on the legs. These patients were successfully
treated using q-switched lasers. In addition, we often find that hydroquinone bleaching programs are a great method as well. Both of these are more effective and quicker than microdermabrasion or chemical peels. The real benefit of chemical peels and microdermabrasion is that in many cases they are cheaper because they are often administered by estheticians instead of medical personnel.
