What Is Cellulitis?

Cellulitis is non-communicable inflammation of the skin and the tissues under the skin, which results from a bacterial infection. Even though several types of bacteria can cause Cellulitis, the majority of this bacterial infection is caused either by Streptococcus or Staphylococcus bacteria. This skin condition may possibly affect any part of your body, but the skin on the face or arms and lower legs is generally affected by this infection. This condition requires prompt medical attention.

Symptoms of Cellulitis

The most common symptoms and signs of cellulites include redness of the skin, fever, pain and tenderness, swelling on the skin, swollen lymph nodes, chills and shivers, malaise, muscle aches, headache, sweating, skin rashes and blisters. Those individuals who are at risk include elderly people, diabetic patients, people with a weakened immune system, obese people, and those with chickenpox and shingles.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Cellulitis

The diagnosis of cellulitis is generally made by analyzing medical history and through a physical examination. Physicians observe the affected area and can request for a blood culture or complete blood count (CBC) test to examine the infection. If cellulitis is diagnosed, the treatment of infection normally involves the use of oral antibiotics. Antibiotics may be used intravenously (IV) or by injection if the infection is more widespread. The severity of the condition will determine whether the patient is to be hospitalized or treated as an outpatient.

Prevention of Cellulitis

There are a few things individuals can do to reduce the likelihood of developing cellulites such as treat cuts and abrasions, keep the area clean and germ-free, reduce the chances of scratching and infecting the skin, wear protective gear on skin when involved in activities that can cause injury, and reduce weight (if overweight). The use of moisturizers is recommended if the patient's skin is dry. A well-balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables and regular exercise is always recommended.
