Varicose Veins Treatment: Diosmin/Hesperidin

Medications are often used in traditional varicose veins treatment. Hesperidin, the active ingredient in the drug marketed as Diosmin, can be used in patients with varicose veins.

Hesperidin

Hesperidin is a flavonoid with the chemical formula C28H34O15 . The name Hesperidin comes from a Greek nymph, Hesperides. Flavonoids are also known as vitamin P or citrins. These substances have antioxidant properties and can be beneficial for the health of blood vessels.

Hesperidin should be consumed in the daily diet, as it promotes the health of veins, maintaining their elasticity and strength; however, hesperidin also has other properties:

  • Reduces blood pressure
  • Reduces cholesterol; cholesterol deposits may contribute to the development of varicose veins
  • Improves bone density
  • Anti inflammatory substance
  • Natural sedative

Sources of Hesperidin

Hesperidin can be found in some foods, especially citrus fruits such as lemons, limes or oranges. The supplementation of these fruits can improve the health of veins. However, the substance is commonly used in the drug marketed as Diosmin or Diosmin 95.

The administration of Diosmin in suitable doses over a period of several weeks can result in reduced varicose veins. In some cases, the treatment may reverse the condition completely. The drug may also be recommended for people that don’t have varicose veins, but are at a high risk of developing these, as they are overweight or have a job that requires prolonged periods of standing up.
