Sensitive skin may cause a variety of symptoms in different patients. The exact symptom, or symptoms, that patients experience may ultimately determine which treatment is used. Symptoms may include redness, dry skin, acne, facial flushing, sunburn, freckling, hives, etc.

Avoiding Triggers

Perhaps the best way to treat sensitive skin is to prevent symptoms from occurring altogether. Identifying the symptoms of sensitive skin and then avoiding the activities or environmental factors that cause them may be helpful in reducing reactions. For instance, patients who experience outbreaks of hives or other skin reactions after eating certain foods should avoid consumption or contact with those foods or ingredients. Staying out of the sun or wearing sunscreen or proper clothing is a good way for those with fair skin to avoid sunburn or freckling. Similarly, individuals who experience skin reactions to certain cosmetics or fabrics should avoid these triggers.

Lotions and Moisturizers

Lotions and moisturizers are often used to treat patients suffering from dry skin. This has proven effective in relieving the itching, redness and flaking associated with this problem. There are several lotions and moisturizers available that may provide relief. Further questions or concerns should be directed to a skincare professional.

Creams and Topical Treatments

When experiencing allergic reactions to certain foods, medication may be prescribed for relief. Acne is another common symptom of sensitive skin. Skincare professionals may recommend one or more of several treatments. These may include over-the-counter topical creams or washes, prescription creams or washes, orally taken medication or certain cosmetic laser or light therapies.

Laser Therapy and Other Cosmetic Treatments

Chemical peels and laser therapies have been used to treat some of the symptoms of sensitive skin, including acne and facial redness, and should be discussed with a skincare professional experienced in these treatments. Those with persistent red complexion caused by conditions such as rosacea have found success through intense pulsed light therapy. This treatment uses a broadband light instead of the narrow band used in many laser treatments, and does not damage the epidermis despite delivering intense light to both the epidermis and dermis. Large pores, sun spots and other blemishes have been treated using this therapy. Other treatments may also be available and should be adequately discussed with a skincare professional. As there are many symptoms of sensitive skin, treatment may vary greatly from one patient to another.
