Sun damage can be a severe condition, depending on how affected the skin is. In people with medium skin tones, the sun damage may not be as severe as in fair skinned people, as the skin is protected by the darker pigmentation. However, people with medium skin tones should be aware of the potential risks of sun damage and get suitable protection against the UV rays.

Effects of Sun Damage on Medium Skin Tones

The sun has damaging effects for all people, regardless of the skin tone. In people with medium skin tone, the pigmentation of the skin will have the role of protecting the skin from the UV light in the sun. However, even with this protection, the skin may be prone to a few sun related problems including:

  • Wrinkled skin and premature aging of skin
  • Sun spots also known as liver spots
  • Rosacea

Research has been carried out to link the continual sun exposure to the development of cancer, especially melanoma and carcinoma. Recent results have shown that cancer may develop regardless of the skin tone.

Sun Protection for Medium Skin Tones

Sun protection is necessary for all people, regardless of their skin tone. In people with medium skin tones, the sunscreen SPF may be lower than in people with fair skin.

People with medium skin tones should get sun block with a SPF of at least between 15 and 20. The products should provide both UVA and UVB ray protective.

The sun should be avoided when it is strong, and sun exposure is only recommended in the morning until 11AM and after 4 PM.
