Facial veins are quite easy to recognize by their appearance and are classified into three distinct categories: spider veins, reticular veins, and varicose veins.
Spider Veins
As the name suggests, these types of veins look similar to a spider's body. Spider veins usually appear as a central red dot with tiny veins (telangiectasias) streaming out from all areas, resembling spider legs. Spider veins commonly appear on the nose and cheeks and are usually 0.5 and 1 millimeter in diameter. In some instances, the telangiectasias veins are so tiny that they simply appear as slight redness of the skin. Spider veins can also be accompanied by common symptoms such itching and burning, especially as a result of another skin condition called rosacea.
Reticular Veins
These veins are a bluish, green color and are 2-3 millimeters in diameter; larger than spider veins. Reticular veins normally form under the eyes, along the cheekbones, on the forehead, and around the temples.
Varicose Veins
While commonly found on the legs, varicose veins can also occur on the face. These types of veins are enlarged and bulge beneath the skin. They are usually blue in color and can be painful.
