Sun Spot Prevention

Sun spots may be cosmetically unappealing and may cause self-consciousness in some individuals. While treatment for sun spots does exist, prevention is the key in keeping the flat brown or tan spots, otherwise known as sun spots, age spots, liver spots, lentigos or lentigines, off of the body.

Keep Out of the Sun

Simply put, the easiest way to prevent sun spots is to stay out of the sun. Of course, this is usually easier said than done, as it is virtually impossible to avoid sun exposure altogether. Practicing modesty when it comes to sun exposure is therefore important.

Sunscreen

Wearing sunscreen is important in preventing sun damage and its long-term effects like sun spots. When outdoors for a prolonged period of time, such as on outings to the beach or when working outdoors, individuals are encouraged to wear at least SPF 15 sunscreen, although some skincare professionals may recommend sunscreen with higher SPF. Fair skinned individuals should wear sunscreen with greater protection.

Cover Up

Another effective way in preventing excessive sun exposure is to wear the proper clothing when spending long periods of time outdoors. This is hard to do on outings to the beach, although some choose to wear a hat while at the beach, but when working in the yard or going on hikes, wearing a light long sleeve shirt, long pants and a hat can do wonders for protecting the skin from the sun. Some individuals may have special circumstances that may make sun exposure harder to avoid. For these individuals, a consultation with a skincare professional may be especially advantageous.
