Symptoms of Stretch Marks

Stretch marks may affect both men and women and can be seen also in adolescents. The stretch marks are due to a sudden growth or weight gain. If you suspect you may have stretch marks, watch out for a few common symptoms of stretch marks.

Common Symptoms of Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are visible on the skin and may have different appearances, depending on how old they are. During the initial few months, the stretch marks will appear as red or purple lines visible on the skin. After 3 to 6 months, the stretch marks will become less visible and will be white in color. The stretch marks are more visible in people with darker or tanned skin.

The stretch marks may be itchy, especially when they occur, as the skin will suddenly stretch and may be painful.

Areas Stretch Marks Appear

The stretch marks may occur in various areas:

  • Abdomen, especially in pregnant women
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Love handle area
  • Arms
  • Breasts or under the breasts

The stretch marks cannot be completely removed with creams, lotions or non invasive cosmetic treatments. Certain laser treatments or cosmetic surgeries (i.e. thigh lift, tummy tuck) can eliminate stretch marks, but may leave other scars.
