Rosacea is a condition manifested through redness on the face and it is a condition that won’t pose any health risks. The condition can be treated with medications, but there are also a few ways to prevent rosacea outbreaks. In order to do this, it is essential to know a few factors that can make rosacea worse.
Diet
A diet that is rich in carbohydrates can make rosacea worse, as the carbs stimulate the fermentation and development of intestinal bacteria, which can cause rosacea.
There are also other foods that may trigger rosacea or make the condition worse. Patients with rosacea should stay away from:
- Cheese, especially aged cheese
- Yogurt and dairy products
- Bacon
- Alcohol, especially wine and beer, which are high in histamines
- Coffee and caffeine products
- Spicy foods
- Marinated foods
Foods that are high in histamines (i.e. yogurt or pork) may also cause histamine allergies, which can trigger rosacea.
Sun Exposure
Sun exposure is the most common cause of rosacea, and constant exposure to sun will make the condition worse. The patient should avoid the sun and wear hats and sunblock.
Stress
Stress is among the top factors that can make rosacea worse. The stress may cause blushing and an increased blood flow in the facial area, making the redness more intensive.
Increased Temperatures
Increased temperatures make rosacea flare ups worse. Both outdoor increased temperatures and interior heating can influence the condition. Humid weather is also bad for rosacea patients. The rosacea can worsen even if the patient performs physical activities. Hot baths or steam baths may also worsen rosacea.
Medications
Certain medications can make the rosacea worse. These medications include:
- Steroids, especially topical products
- Immune system suppressants such as cyclophosphamides
Treatments
Certain cosmetic treatments can worsen rosacea. These treatments include:
- Microdermabrasion
- Laser treatments
- Chemical peels that employ substances such as tretinoin, isotretinoin and benzoyl peroxide
Certain facial creams that contain the above mentioned compounds may also affect patients with rosacea. In addition, fragrances, even the ones used in creams, may irritate the skin and cause erythema.
Intestinal Bacteria
Intestinal bacteria may cause rosacea flare ups. The intestines contain some harmless bacteria that are needed for a healthy digestion. However, these bacteria may overgrow and cause intestinal distress.
Studies have shown that the overgrowth of intestinal bacteria influences the occurrence of rosacea. After the treatment of intestinal bacteria with antibiotics, the redness should go away as well.
Other Factors
Other factors that can make rosacea worse include:
- Windy weather
- Sudden temperature changes
- Medical conditions such as allergies or autoimmune conditions
Preventing Rosacea Outbreaks
Rosacea outbreaks or the worsening of the condition can be done by identifying the factors that make the redness more intensive and trying to remove these from the patient’s environment. A special diet may be recommended, along with stress therapy.
