Cost of Psoriasis Treatment

Treatment for psoriasis aims to interrupt the cycle that causes the red, scaly patches from appearing. The increased production of skin cells is what leads to the plaques found on the skin. By interrupting this cycle, patients may reduce inflammation and plaque formation.

Topical Corticosteroids

These are anti-inflammatory drugs that are often prescribed for treatment of psoriasis. They are designed to relieve itching and inflammation by suppressing the immune system. Certain scalp solutions are available for treatment of psoriasis on the scalp. Talk to your doctor about which topical treatment is right for you, as medicine may vary in strength.

Other Medications

Vitamin D analogues may be used to slow skin cell growth. This may be used as a topical ointment or cream, and may be used in conjunction with other topical treatments. Anthralin may be used in combination with ultraviolet light to normalize DNA activities in skin cells. The treatment may remove scales from the skin, making it smoother. However, as it may stain skin, clothing, bedding and other items, it is usually kept on the skin for a very short time before being removed. Topical retinoids, calcineurin inhibitors, salicylic acid, coal tar and moisturizers may also be used to treat psoriasis.

Light Therapy

Light therapy involves exposing the skin to natural or artificial sources of ultraviolet light. Sunlight, UVB phototherapy, narrow band UVB therapy, photochemotherapy and excimer laser are possible sources of ultraviolet light used to treat psoriasis. Various orally taken medications may also be available to provide treatment for psoriasis. Talk to your doctor and insurance carrier to determine if your insurance will cover the cost of treatment. Price may vary depending on your insurance and which clinic or doctor's office you visit, so it is best to consult the clinic directly for pricing.
