Melasma Natural Remedy: Onion Juice

Dark patches and discolorations that appear on the skin are the usual symptoms of melasma. Melasma is a skin condition that can be treated by applying topical lightening solutions to fade the dark discolorations. Some topical bleaching agents are expensive, unsafe and might not work effectively to reduce the appearance of melasma. Fortunately, there are safe, natural treatments available that can be used to diminish the effects.

The Onion Juice Treatment

Onion juice is an effective home remedy used by melasma sufferers to restore the skin tone. It is a natural treatment that works to remove the unsightly darkening of the skin caused from melasma. In comparison to skin lightening creams, onion juice is a safe and inexpensive alternative. Overall, the pungent herb is used for various ailments and provides nourishment to the skin cells. It contains a range of sulfur containing compounds called sulfoxides (cyteinesulfoxide, isomer of alliin) and cepaenes. In addition to treating melasma, it is also used for wounds and the removal of acne blemishes.

Before applying the onion juice treatment, your face should be washed and all traces of makeup should be removed. Peel off the onion skin, cut into chunks and place them in a blender. Blend the onions and squeeze out the juice. Then take a cotton swab and apply a thin layer of onion juice to the affected areas of the face. Allow the treatment to dry for 15 minutes and then rinse with warm water. When this treatment is used on a daily basis, visible results occur within three weeks.
