Not every person will suffer from cold sores. An individual must possess the virus that causes this form of herpes. Cold sores fall into the category of the Herpes Simplex Virus type 1. Type 2 Herpes Simplex causes more serious forms of herpes on the genitals and other areas of the body; Herpes Simplex type 1 will sometimes infect areas off of the face as well.
Spreading Cold Sores

Cold sores spread from person to person only if someone obtains the Herpes Simplex Virus. This often occurs when two or more people share eating utensils or foods.
