Dandruff is characterized by itchy and flaky skin on the scalp. It is a chronic disease on the scalp that can be very embarrassing for many individuals. It is not dangerous and treatment of dandruff is not considered medically necessary. The condition is not even contagious, but treatment is often sought to end the embarrassment and self-consciousness that is often associated with the problem. Dandruff may be due to various causes from dry skin to irritated or oily skin to psoriasis. Other conditions such as eczema and malassezia, which is a yeast-like infection, may also be to blame. Dandruff may also be due to lax or infrequent shampooing or a sensitivity to certain hair care products. Fortunately, getting rid of dandruff is not only possible, but relatively cheap and easy.

If you're suffering from just a mild case of dandruff, your dermatologist or doctor may recommend daily washing using a gentle shampoo. This often helps to get rid of oil and skin cell buildup. Specially formulated dandruff shampoos are also available and many may be purchased over-the-counter at your local drug store. If these options are unsuccessful, your doctor or dermatologist may prescribe a shampoo or steroid lotion to fight dandruff. Individuals are encouraged to have patience when treating dandruff and to be consistent with treatment for best results. Other lifestyle remedies may include reducing your stress, eating healthy and getting out into the sun, although in moderation of course. Limiting or cutting out certain hair care products may also be encouraged.
