Causes of Acne

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions that affects nearly 90% of the population at some point during their lives. There are a number of factors that can cause acne to develop.

Hormones

Hormones are responsible for stimulating the sebaceous glands to produce extra sebum. Sebum is an oily liquid that transports dead skin cells to the surface area of the skin through the follicles. In each follicle grows a tiny hair and when the follicle becomes clogged, pimples form. During puberty, hormones are especially active and have the biggest impact on our skin. Male hormones called androgens are the biggest contributors to acne and because men naturally have more of these hormones than women do, young men tend to experience severer cases of acne. In contrast, women are more likely to experience adult acne because of the role hormones play during the menstrual cycle.

Genetics

If your family members had a history of acne problems, there is a chance that you could inherit the same hormonal control factors and skin characteristics that can lead to acne.

Skin Products

Makeup, lotions, and other products that irritate the skin can lead to acne. Some cosmetic products contain oily ingredients that function like the sebum oils in our skin. When these products are applied to our skin, an abundance of oil is present and pores become clogged. Also, expired skin products and makeup brushes that are not cleaned properly can cause excess bacteria on the skin, which can clog pores and produce acne.

Environmental conditions

When the skin is exposed to extreme temperatures and high humidity conditions it eliminate the pores from expelling the skin's oils and thus, can lead to breakouts.

Stress

Our body's response to stress triggers our immune system to stimulate oil production in the glands, leading to clogged pores and the development of acne. Acne is one of the most common skin conditions experienced by both men and women. Although there is no permanent cure for this condition, by understanding the number of factors that can contribute to its development, you can help successfully improve the health and appearance of your skin.
