Can Taking Methadone Cause Excessive Sweating?

There are medications that have side effects, and one of these side effects might be excessive sweating. Methadone, for example, is a narcotic medication that is known to produce such an effect. People who are engaged in opiate addiction, such as morphine, heroine or opium, use methadone as a controlling agent to treat the symptoms of drug withdrawal. This medication can also be prescribed to help alleviate chronic pain in cancer patients.

Methadone Side Effects

Methadone is a water soluble drug usually taken in the form of an injection, pills or liquids. Your physician will determine the accurate dose that fits your specific needs. If methadone is used appropriately under medical supervision, dangerous side effects are often minimal. However, harmful consequences such as methadone dependence or even death can occur if you use the drug in excess. Profuse night sweating and heat intolerance are adverse reactions that occur in some people, even when the medication is taken appropriately.

In addition to sweating, you may also experience weakness, severe drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, and redness or flushing of the face. Once you experience several of these side effects, it is important that you notify your physician immediately. During your methadone treatment, you should be closely monitored. Methadone can produce a short term side effect or a long term side effect.

Controlling Excessive Sweating

Excessive sweating from a methadone treatment can be very uncomfortable. The most effective ways to control excessive sweating includes:

  • Using a prescribed anti-perspirant deodorant (clinical strength)
  • Drinking sufficient water to keep the system hydrated
  • Using talcum powder throughout the day
