Alopecia Prevention

Alopecia, also known as hair loss, is most of the times genetic, but there are a number of patients who may suffer from this condition due to other factors as well. Alopecia may be hard to prevent if it is genetic, but it may be delayed and prevented in other cases.

Diet Monitoring

The patient’s diet may determine the early onset of alopecia or may delay it. Studies have shown that a diet that lacks the necessary amounts of vitamin A and E can cause hair loss. The patient should have a balanced amount of nutrients and avoid trans fats, which have been linked to poor hair quality and even hair loss.

Monitoring Hormonal Levels

Hair loss may be caused by a deficiency in certain hormones in the body (i.e. testosterone). A hormonal deficiency or imbalance can be indicated through a number of symptoms such as:

  • Dry skin/ acne
  • Hair thinning
  • Irritability or changes in behavior/ mood swings
  • Lack of libido

Tests can establish if there are any hormonal changes, and hormonal therapy may prevent hair loss.

Use of Hair Products

The use of certain hair products and hair treatments may cause hair loss. When choosing hair products, it’s important to opt for products that contain mainly natural ingredients. Treatments such as perms or hair straightening products may weaken the hair and lead to hair thinning and alopecia.

Avoiding Stress

Stress has been associated with more intensive hair loss, so avoiding stress may eliminate excessive hair loss and preserve the quality of the hair.
