Acne Treatment: Chinese Herbs

There are numerous acne treatment options available to fight and control the severity of the acne. Acne is a common skin problem that occurs to almost everyone, especially during puberty. Acne is related to sebum production, and as there is more sebum production with the increase in sex hormones during puberty, most people experience bouts of acne during this period. Causes for Acne

Blood-Heat Type

Treatment of this type of acne is by cooling the blood and clearing the pathogenic heat. Thus, a decoction of herbs like loquat leaf, dried rehmannia root, mulberry bark, coptis root, scrophularia root, Cape jasmine fruit, red peony root forsythia fruit and white chrysanthemum flower is made in order to clear the lungs from pathogens.

Toxic-Heat Type

This type of acne results in scattered acne, inflamed nodules and furuncles on the face. Here, an antiphlogistic decoction of five drugs with other herbs like Forsythia fruit, chrysanthemum flower, honeysuckle flower, Chinese violet, dandelion flower, dried rehmannia root, loquat leaf, tangerine seed, moutan bark and platycodon bark are used for clearing the toxic heat.

Phlegm Accumulation Type

Here, the skin problem is characterized by the presence of acne, indurative acne and cystic acne. Two old drug decoctions of peach kernel and safflower with additional herbs like tangerine peel, poria, red sage root, pinellia tuber, orange kernel, Chinese angelica root, nutgrass flatsedge, Zhejiang fritillaria bulb, loquat leaf, scuttelaria root and licorice root are prescribed to clear away the phlegm and regulate the Ying system.

Action of Herbs

  • Huang Qin is a root herb; its anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-fungal, anti-pyretic, anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-allergic properties have proven to be useful in acne treatment.
  • Jin Yin Hua is the Honey Suckle flower, which has diaphoretic, anti-pyretic, anti-viral, diuretic and other healing properties that help in reducing the toxins.
  • Pu Gong Yin is Dandelion that has the ability to reduce heat and detoxify the blood. It also can act as diuretic and helps in weight loss.

Like the above-mentioned ones, most of the Chinese herbs are found to have anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory or diuretic properties, which help their formulations to effectively tackle the acne problems. Similar to other alternative medicines, Chinese herbs also take a very long time to cure your acne-related problems.
