Photoexacerbation of other conditions

Some dermatologic conditions can be exacerbated by ultraviolet or visible light. Such exacerbations are quite uncommon, but when they occur there can be a significant management problem.

Conditions which can sometimes be aggravated by exposure to ultraviolet light include:
  • Herpes simplex infection
  • Rosacea
  • Psoriasis
  • Pityriasis rubra pilaris
  • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma
  • Atopic dermatitis
  • Acne
  • Collagen vascular disease, especially lupus erythematosus
  • Lichen planus
  • Photosensitivity disorders such as the porphyrias, pellagra
  • Genodermatoses such as Rothmund-Thomson syndrome
